This book has an interesting plot and was an easy novelette to read. The main protagonist Billy was made a local hero when he stopped a man on a knife wielding killing spree in a junior school.
The book moves between the moments of the massacre and what Billy sees and does to his life today. He's become quite reclusive and damaged from the trauma and is uncomfortable with the attention from others locally who see him as a hero still.
It shows us Billy's life now in a sad light, his life changing dramatically after the trauma, his loss of things and people he loved. I found the flow between time frames a bit jerky at times, it wasn't always instantly obvious if I was reading the past or present.
It's a sad novelette in content but the ending has warmth and a positive feel to it, if it didn't this would be rather depressing. I think some deeper character development with Billy would have been good, more insight into his damaged psyche.
It's written reasonably well and I read it quickly from start to finish. Some refining would have made this a three star read for me.
What a good book to read. This just shows the torment that anyone would go through when put in a situation that involves your own child.
It piked my interest and I was hoping for a bit more depth but I did continue to read it to see what else was going to take place.
Solid story with great ending. Would recommend to anyone who wants a good story with a nice ending. Some grammatical problems due to UK English being use and some typos but they don't distract from the story. Happy reading.
